About the Wine

Pyjama Mencia
Demencia Wines, Bierzo, Red Wine

The first impression is often the most lasting, and if you've never encountered Mencia before, this bottle is the ideal introduction. Nacho pours his heart into crafting a wine that not only captures the nuanced subtleties of the Villafranca del Bierzo terroir but also presents an intense, open Mencia perfect for any occasion.

While this might be the entry-level wine in his collection, no corners are cut. In the vineyard, Nacho diligently nurtures a soil rich in organic matter and microorganisms, ensuring his vines receive the vital nutrients required for yielding healthy grapes.

The Pyjama range is designed to showcase a regional overview. Therefore, it blends grapes from various vineyards in Villafranca del Bierzo, featuring diverse orientations and soil types, and situated at altitudes ranging from 490-600 metres. Remarkably, all vines are at least 60 years old and employ the guyot system, rendering hand-harvesting the exclusive method of collection.

In the cellar, Nacho keeps interventions to a minimum, acknowledging that most of the effort is expended in the vineyard. The wines undergo spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel without the addition of foreign yeasts. Afterward, the wine finds a new home in used French barriques for a year before bottling. In February 2023, a mere 9,000 bottles were produced. Given that this is his most extensive output, it remains a limited edition.

Nacho views this wine as a genuine representation of his dedication and the land's unique character. He offers a wine that's lively, expressive, and elegant. And just as Nacho intended, it's effortlessly drinkable, and never boring.
