Demencia Fuentes de San Lázaro 2019 is a reflection of Bierzo's potential for producing remarkable aged wines. The vineyard, planted in 1905, is strategically located where the Camino de Santiago (St James’ Way) enters Villafranca del Bierzo.

The vineyard has a density of 4,200 plants per hectare on loamy clay soil. Positioned to face the south at an altitude of 600 meters, the vines bask in sunlight from dawn to dusk. The Cotelo mountain shields the site from the valley's southern winds, creating a unique microclimate that protects it from frosts and storms. This environment imparts an extraordinary fruity sensation to the wines, resulting in tasteful and balanced profiles.

While the 2019 vintage was marked by limited rainfall, the Mencía old vines, with their deep roots and adaptation to the local climate, held their own against the drought. Grapes were hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts. Nacho ages the wines for 24 months in 3rd-year oak barrels, allowing the fruit to be the star. Given that no clarifying agents are used, Nacho racks the wines twice during this period.

Demencia Fuentes de San Lázaro 2019 can be stored for up to 10 years, enhancing its attributes. Yet, it's already at a prime tasting stage. As the latest addition to our selection of age-worthy wines, it demonstrates Mencía's potential for aging. This wine is notably limited, with only 373 bottles produced.
