About the Wine
Cholo Loureiro 2023
Manuel Formigo, Ribeiro, White Wine
At Nativo Wine Club, we love to showcase and highlight the lesser-known single grape varieties of Spain. This is why we often select wines made from these varieties on their own. In this case, we bring you a single-variety wine made from Loureiro. Native to the north of Portugal, right along the border with Galicia, this grape is widely used on both sides of the border.
Loureiro means “laurel” in Portuguese, referring to the aroma of the berries, which is reminiscent of laurel flowers and leaves. It is considered an old variety, closely related to Alvarinho, with historical references dating back to the 18th century! It is best known as the primary grape in Portugal’s crisp Vinho Verde, appreciated for its expressive aromas and fresh, vibrant profile.
In Spain, it is relatively rare, with around 600 hectares planted, mostly in Galicia. Loureiro is typically blended with other varieties to balance its crisp acidity. However, Manuel Formigo decided to showcase the grape on its own, believing in its aromatic potential. The name “Cholo”, which means “alone” in Galician, refers to the fact that this time, Loureiro stands without its usual blending partners.
The grapes for this wine come from two of Formigo’s estate vineyards, with vines averaging 20 years old. The soils are extremely rocky and poor—an essential trait in such a humid region. With a base of granite and plenty of stones and gravel, the soil ensures excellent drainage for the vines. To preserve its aromatic purity, the wine is aged only in stainless steel, without malolactic fermentation, resulting in a refreshingly vibrant wine. Only 2,000 bottles are produced.
