About the Wine

Kimera Tinto
Gonzalo Celayeta, Navarra, Red Wine

El Duende, in its essence, captures the mystique of the storied sprite with the same name, embodying the charm and spirit of its terroir. Gonzalo Celayeta’s mission to preserve the unique environment from which this wine springs ensures that each bottle is imbued with the area's distinct character. The quality and longevity of this Garnacha are testament to its authentic soul, one that promises to enchant with each sip, much like the mythical Duende enchants the places it inhabits.

El Duende is Gonzalo Celayeta’s top Garnacha. Like all his wines, it vividly reflects its terroir. Originating from two vineyards previously part of his entry-level Kimera, he chose to craft a distinct bottling from these grapes.

What distinguishes these two vineyards? Firstly, their sandy soil. Typically, heavier soils give robust wines, whereas sandy soils contribute to a lighter body and enhanced aromatics, often lending a floral touch. Secondly, their location on slopes surrounded not by other vineyards but by pure mountain herbs and vegetation adds complexity. This terrain forces the vines to delve deep through dry sandstone for water, stressing them and enhancing the wine's aromatic profile.

After hand harvesting, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel and then transferred to used French oak barrels for 14 months. This process adds softness, ensures longevity, and introduces a layer of spiced complexity to the wine.

Three years later, El Duende is unveiled. It presents intense aromas of blackberries, black cherry candy, rosemary, thyme, and clove. On the palate, its vibrancy masks the region's warmth, offering a Garnacha that is elegant, with soft ripe tannins and notable acidity. The familiar candied notes of Garnacha linger, culminating in a lengthy finish. This wine is poised for a long future but is also immediately enjoyable.
