About the Wine

Matalaz 2022
Oxer Bastegieta, Rioja Alavesa, Red Wine

Oxer Bastegieta, driven by the singularity of Rioja Alavesa, began producing wines in Laguardia in 2009. His meticulous approach and focus on symbolism are evident in the names and labels of his wines. Oxer invests in old vineyards, such as the 100-year-old Artillero in Elvillar, aiming to express the art of viticulture through minimal intervention, organic practices, and biodynamic methods. His wines emphasize elegance, freshness, and refinement, using spontaneous fermentation, minimal extraction, and a mix of used barrels and clay amphorae.

Matalaz 2022 is a tribute to a historical figure who led a popular revolt. The wine is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo, 10% Viura, and 10% Graciano, sourced from old vineyards (50-80 years) in Lapuebla de Labarca, with gravelly soils. The vineyards are managed organically, and the grapes are handpicked. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts in a 6,500L vat with 20% whole clusters, followed by malolactic fermentation and aging for 8 months in 500L French oak barrels.

This vintage was marked by an exceptionally warm growing season, resulting in a complex and concentrated wine. On the palate, Matalaz 2022 offers red fruit flavors with floral notes reminiscent of traditional Rioja Alavesa wines, accompanied by a pleasantly fresh acidity and a long, fine finish. Best served at 16ºC, this wine can be enjoyed now or aged until 2030.
