Vineyard & Viticulture

The vineyard, located in Viñaspre, is less than one hectare in size and features ancient vines between 90 and 105 years old. The soil is a mix of sandstone and marl, lending the wine its minerality and elegance. Situated at 590 meters, the vineyard’s northern exposure and high altitude contribute to its fresh, vibrant character. These conditions create a unique microclimate with a distinctly Atlantic influence, a rarity in the warmer Rioja Alavesa region.

Winemaking

El Abundillano is predominantly Garnacha (90%), with small amounts of Tempranillo (6%) and Malvasía (4%). The grapes are partially destemmed (60%) and fermented spontaneously in open-top vats, with gentle punch-downs to preserve the wine’s elegance. The Garnacha does not undergo malolactic fermentation, maintaining its freshness and juiciness. The wine is aged for 10 months in second-use 500-liter Hungarian oak barrels without racking, enhancing its silkiness and complexity. Bottled in August 2023, this is a wine of exceptional finesse.
