About the Wine

Custero 2022
Tentenublo Wines, Rioja, Red Wine

With Custero, Roberto Oliván returns to his roots with this wine. As a multigenerational Riojan grape grower turned winemaker, he consistently honors the past while planning for the future. Custero is an homage to the traditional wines of Rioja, originally crafted by grape growers for their own enjoyment. The name “Custero” refers to an old-fashioned wine that is simple, straightforward, yet full of flavor, akin to a "Winemaker’s Reserve."

Far from simple, Custero boasts multiple layers of spices, fruit, and herbs that define this well-structured wine. It’s crafted from grapes harvested from all his young vines, aged 4-7 years, predominantly located in Viñaspre. This ensures at least a village wine bursting with flavor, not confined to a single grape variety. True to traditional methods, this wine is a blend of various varieties, with 60% of the wine being Garnacha, while the rest is divided among eight other varieties, of which 15% are white. All varieties are co-fermented spontaneously in open vats with stems included. For aging, the wine is split: half rests in second-use oak barriques and the other in concrete vats for 8 months, the result comes down to only 6,400 bottles.

The outcome is a wine true to its name, a well-kept secret that is both expressive and brimming with personality. It greets the palate with notes of red cherries, berry compote, and black currants, supported by a robust structure of acidity. In line with Tentenublo wines, the oak influence is subtle and impeccably balanced. It’s indeed a privilege to have such a wine, a tribute to Roberto’s family tradition, in our collection!
