Can Descregut
Penedes, Catalonia
Can Descregut is a small, third-generation, family-owned winery located in the heart of Penedès, specifically in Vilobí del Penedès. Producing around 60,000 bottles annually, their output is evenly split between traditional method sparkling wines and white wines. The estate spans 25 hectares, divided into over 20 parcels, mostly situated within Vilobí del Penedès, an area known for its gypsum-rich soils. The vineyards, which range in age from plantings in the 1950s to the present day, thrive in a Mediterranean climate characterized by mild winters and hot summers, moderated by the nearby sea, about 20 km away, and an altitude of approximately 350 meters.
Dedicated to organic and biodynamic farming practices, Can Descregut is certified by the CCPAE (Catalan Council of Organic Agriculture). Although they currently purchase biodynamic preparations, there are plans to produce them in-house in the future. Their approach in the winery is one of minimal intervention, using indigenous yeasts and avoiding clarifying agents and stabilizers, aiming for the lowest possible sulfur levels to allow their wines to express the true character of their terroir and grape varieties.

Can Descregut’s philosophy and dedication to quality are part of a broader movement in the Penedès region. In 2015, the Association of Wine Producers and Growers Corpinnat was formed to elevate the standards of Spanish sparkling wines and distinguish them from larger cava producers. Adhering to Corpinnat’s stringent rules, Can Descregut uses at least 90% indigenous varieties (such as Xarel·lo, Macabeo, Malvasia, and Parellada), ensures 100% organic farming, hand harvesting, and vinifies their wines entirely within the Corpinnat territory in the DOP Penedès. The wines must be aged for a minimum of 18 months for non-vintage and 36 months for vintage wines.
The winery’s history dates back to 1992 when Arantxa de Cara and her husband, Marc Milà, purchased the estate, which had been making base wine for cava. They transitioned the vineyards to organic farming in 2005. The diverse soils, predominantly clay, between Vilobí and Font-rubí, are home to old vines of white Xarel·lo, red Xarel·lo, Macabeo, Parellada, and Sumoll. Named after the farmhouse Masia de Can Descregut, the winery produces both sparkling and still wines, with a production of about 5,000 cases per vintage. Their commitment to quality, tradition, and innovation places Can Descregut at the forefront of the Penedès region, producing wines that truly reflect the spirit and terroir of their land.
